For over three years, I have been working on a project that comes from my heart. While photographing 104 couples—all married between 34 and 72 years—I asked them to share their wisdom and their secrets to a long-lasting marriage. They honored me with honest, funny, heart-warming responses. Photos of these amazing couples, accompanied by their meaningful words, will be the perfect gift for anyone searching for direction on how to navigate life or who simply wants to appreciate the many faces of love.
My hope is to honour these couples and all couples who put in the hard work to maintain a lasting marriage. Without exception, every couple told me it was not easy, but worth the effort to sustain a lifelong love story.
Jodi loves capturing people in portraits that can be treasured for generations to come. She has a particular interest in photographing experienced faces that have lived through many decades, combining their photos with their words to create lasting legacies that inform and inspire. Much of her work catalogs life in rural northern Alberta, where she lives with her family on their third-generation farm in High Prairie. A photographer for over 20 years, Jodi is inspired by nature, beautiful skies, the changing seasons, and people who love each other.
It was such a gift and an honour to spend time with these couples while I captured their portraits and learned about their lives and marriages.
I hope that you too will feel the love captured in these portraits and be inspired by their wisdom.
Having been married for 28 years myself, I know it's not easy, but spending time with each of these couples renewed my faith in marriage and helped me remember that Love is worth the hard work. My wish is that flipping through these pages will help you remember that too!
Jodi’s first book, “Wisdom of Our Elders,” featured 78 elders and their advice for others. She was originally inspired by the work of an Australian photographer, Liz Arcus, and the project in its totality keeps her “feeling inspired and fulfilled” when work becomes overwhelming.
“I like to shoot who I want, and how I want to shoot them; it gives so much freedom, artistically,” she said. “I am inspired by elders, and we can all learn from their life experiences if we just listen to them. I also do this project to help them feel valued and important in our community.
“Love is worth the work! Please honor our elders by listening to them, and remembering how valuable a resource they are in our society.”
“Once married, I vowed to myself to be a better man. It is a daily challenge; sometimes you gain and sometimes you lose, but you never quit trying.”
“Love is a verb, an action word that doesn’t depend on how we feel in the moment.”
“There is an old adage that, in marriage, a husband would make major decisions and his wife the minor, day-to-day ones. I can say with certainty we have never faced a major decision in 50 years.”
“Marriage may start with love, but a sense of humor keeps it happy!”
“It helps if you are first friends. You need to like your partner as well as love them.”
“There are inevitable rough gravel roads on the journey. Work hard together to get back to smooth pavement.”
